Bi-Topia: Seeking Self-definition on Stage

Bi-Topia: Seeking Self-definition on Stage

by Sacha Crowther

Gunshots, scattered debris, fatigues, and a war room: we’re immediately thrown into the cleverly employed military trope that punctuates this production. Here we meet Sam Danson, a ‘self-confessed people-pleaser’ battling with heteronormative ideals.

In a hilariously shaped opening scene, Sam and his flip chart walk us through what it means to be a “manly” man. Through observational satire, the audience is immediately immersed in Sam’s narrative. We’re welcomed into a series of “we’ve all been there” and “that’s so true” moments that set the scene for the production ahead.

In this play-cum-sketch-show, Bi-Topia tells the story of battling with uncertain sexuality, mental health and the very definition of masculinity. From schoolboy hijinx through teenage uncertainty, unfulfilling jobs, and particularly revealing nights out, Sam relives his journey of self-discovery.

At its core, this is a story of seeking where you belong. And our storyteller for the evening is open, honest, and magnetically genuine.

Despite the moments of universal recognition that pervade, Bi-Topia is incredibly intimate and personal. There’s a distinct weight that hangs in the room, as we’re consciously aware of a performer bearing their truth. Sam seeks to find who he is, at war with a society where bisexuality is inexplicably more acceptable for women than men.

The bill lists just a single cast member, yet Sam introduces us to a host of colourful characters. This one-man show is an exercise in intimate storytelling meets character comedy. At first, it’s charming to watch how he switches back and forth between roles. A few scenes on, and we feel almost as though the characters are really there. The simple stage is suddenly full: Sam, his interlocutor, and his internal monologue.

Working with director Rikki Beadle-Blair, Sam finds a way to tell his story without becoming a monotonous solo piece. Where a show like this could easily lean towards self-indulgence, the pair have worked hard to fight back. Bi-Topia is compelling, witty, and very well crafted.

Bi-Topia is touring the North of England throughout the first half of 2024. Look out for upcoming shows near you and view the full tour list on the production website.
