Furlough Fashion

Furlough Fashion

by Sacha Crowther

Of late, not a day goes by without someone referring to the “strange times” in which we live. We’re trapped indoors, hugging is criminal, and new words are entering the English vernacular. No, I don’t mean “Covididiots” or any such journalistic liberties; I’m talking about “furlough”.

“Furlough” (noun) - leave of absence; lifeline to business owners.

More than 140,000 companies in the UK have applied for the government’s furlough scheme, all hoping for support from the £42billion budget

A vast majority of the population are uncertain and scared about what lies ahead. But I’ve always found that the cure for being scared is being silly! So let’s take a breath and indulge for a moment in our more playful priorities: fashion darling!

We all know that we’re not supposed to stay in our pyjamas all day, else health experts warn that we’ll turn into Miss Havisham before quarantine is over.

So what should we wear?

  • Comfortable slippers

Always build your outfit on strong foundations. When you step out of bed in the morning, your slippers are the first accessory you’ll don. We’re not going anywhere far or fast, so we might as well treat our feet well.

  • An apron

The banana bread addiction is seemingly more contagious than COVID-19. Fear not, there are plenty of other wholesome activities for you to wear an apron of your choosing. Cooking, baking, protecting your clothes from your newfound love of oil paints: be sure to wear an apron in these trying times!

  • Anything with pockets

If you want your step counter to count anything close to normal, it’s best to keep your phone in your pocket at all times. It’s remarkable how quickly those trips to the fridge and back will add up!

  • Fancy dress

You don’t have to wait for a party invitation or a coveted role in a play to pull out your costume box. Trust me, donning fancy dress can brighten up your day and your Instagram (for those so inclined). As a warm up, try some jazzy headgear for your online hangouts. You’ll be surprised how many people you inspire, who all happen to have a hat within arm’s reach!

  • NSFW Showpieces

Let’s face it, our most fabulous clothes and accessories rarely fit the bill as “office attire”. So now is your chance to wear them in. Indulge in glittery garments; show off in see-through; and, since it’s nearly summer, anything cropped goes.

  • Cotton underwear

Finally, a serious one: skip the lacy knickers, thrush is the last thing you need right now!

So, when you’re feeling down in the inevitable dumps, try to realign your view of the situation. Furlough, work from home, quarantined and all alone… they’re all just scenarios that welcome comfortable, fabulous, creative fashion choices!
